Course Assessment
You will be required to sit three paper based written exams. Each paper makes up a percentage of your overall A Level qualification, and two pieces of non-examined coursework (NEA) as set out below:
- Paper 1 – Language Variation: 2 hours 15 mins – 60 marks, 35% of the A-level
- Section A – Individual Variation: One question on two unseen 21st-century linked data/texts.
- Section B – Variation over Time: One question on two unseen texts/data, from two different eras.
- Paper 2 – Child Language: 1 hour 15 mins – 45 marks, 20% of the A-level.
- Learners will answer one question based on a set of unseen info – either written or spoken. Learners will produce an extended response.
- Paper 3 – Investigating Language: 1 hour 45 mins – 45 marks, 25% of the A-level.
- Section A: One question on unseen info. Students must answer the question on the subtopic they have researched themselves (AO1, AO2, AO3 assessed).
- Section B: One evaluation question. Students must answer the question on the subtopic they have researched themselves and make connections with data from their investigation.
- NEA – Non Examined Assessment
- The NEA is made up of two assignments totalling 50 marks and makes up 20% of your overall A Level English Language qualification.
- Assignment 1 – (1500-2000 words, 30 marks): two pieces of original writing from the same genre, with focus on function and/or audience (AO5 assessed).
- Assignment 2 – (1000 words, 20 marks): one explanation, reflecting on the two pieces of original writing you produced and making connections or links with research undertaken.
We can offer you a guaranteed exam space at one of our exam centres it the UK when you choose to study this A Level English course with us at Upskill Online UK. Alternatively, you may choose to organise and book your own exams.
During the course, you will be required to complete learning activities, tests or assignments to show your knowledge and understanding of the units you have just learned. They do not count towards your overall English Language qualification. They are marked by your course tutor and feedback will be provided with each completed unit.

Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course. We do advise that you have achieved a GCSE English Language or an equivalent qualification before enrolling on this course. This A Level English Language course is at difficulty level 3 – equivalent to a BTEC or a 60 credit qualification. This course is suitable for learners of all ages.
